ABOUT MUSEUM

History of Hearing Aids

Missouri's Leading Museum of Hearing Aids & Hearing Culture.

For centuries, people have struggled with hearing loss. It was assumed that those with hearing loss are disabled. However, things changed in the 17 th century with the invention of the first hearing aid device. The first hearing aid device was an ear trumpet that came in a range of shapes and sizes.

The first electric hearing aid was created in 1898 by Miller Reese Hutchison. In 1913, commercially manufactured hearing aids came to the market. However, they were cumbersome to use and not highly effective.
